Bit of an odd place this, the beach is made up for a short spit with sandy beaches either side. Llantwit is an excellent break however and can throw left and right handers, both breaking over the boulder reef. The waves can peel for some time but generally needs a decent shwell to set it off. Best from low to mid tide and N to E winds are best. Not a great beach for learners due to the reef break and the rips that can occur. Stole this picture from the BBC site.
Ogmore-By-Sea
A river mouth break that is generally quite fickle, though when working can offer a good left hander. This is quite a dangerous spot for beginners as it can have a serious rip out to sea die to the river. It works in NE winds. This isn't a picture of Ogmore, im gonna get one soon ok.
Porthcawl - Conehouse
A good beach to go to if Rest bay is too messy. I surf when i've mistakenly thought there was some surf. Its an OK break, but never good. N to NE winds are offshore. It will be busy here if Rest is crap. There's a point break to the east of here at Trecco bay over the Black Rock, also worth a sniff. Coney is OK for beginner but watch for rips. Aint got a snap of Coney so here's one of a cute dog instead.
Porthcawl - RestBay
A very popular spot this, especially in the summer. The waves work at most stages of the tide with both left and right handers, though there is a left that works off the rocks towards high tide. Rips can be a problem here with many a surfer getting in trouble on the left hand side of the beach being dragger towards the rocks. NE winds are offshore. Surf gear and lessons are available most of the time from Simon Tuck.
Aberavon
With both a Reef and a Beach break, Aberavon can be a very consistent spot. Due to this it can become very popular. The Beach is a left hander which is best an hour before high tide and two hours after low tide. Has a good long wave. The Reef only works on big swell but can produce nice lefts. Not ideal for beginners this one.
